Supervision & Appraisals for Team Leaders
2-Hour CHCT Leadership, Culture & Improvement Workshop
This practical 3-hour workshop is designed to help Team Leaders, Senior Carers and new managers carry out effective supervision and appraisal conversations that support staff performance, accountability, confidence and development.
In care settings, supervision and appraisal should not be treated as paperwork exercises or annual formalities. When used well, they are powerful leadership tools that help staff understand expectations, reflect on practice, identify development needs, and feel supported in their role.
Many Team Leaders are expected to supervise staff without always being shown how to structure the conversation, give constructive feedback, set clear goals, or follow up concerns in a fair and professional way.
This workshop focuses on the practical skills needed to make supervision and appraisal conversations purposeful, supportive and effective. It explores how to prepare for supervision, structure discussions, give feedback, agree actions, support staff development, and use supervision as part of a wider culture of quality, accountability and continuous improvement.
Delegates will leave with a clearer understanding of how to use supervision and appraisals to strengthen staff confidence, improve practice, and support better outcomes for people receiving care.

Experienced care staff preparing for supervisory responsibilities
Supervision and appraisals are often seen as administrative tasks rather than practical leadership opportunities. This can lead to:
supervision sessions that lack structure or purpose
unclear expectations for staff
missed opportunities to address poor practice early
feedback being avoided, delayed or delivered inconsistently
staff development needs not being properly identified
appraisal conversations becoming disconnected from everyday practice
Team Leaders feeling unsure about how to balance support with accountability
This workshop helps delegates understand how to use supervision and appraisals as practical leadership tools that support staff, improve standards and strengthen care quality.
The aim of this workshop is to support Team Leaders, Senior Carers and new managers to plan and deliver effective supervision and appraisal conversations that improve communication, staff performance, accountability and professional development in care settings.
By the end of the workshop, delegates will be better able to:
understand the purpose of supervision and appraisals within a care setting
recognise how supervision supports quality, accountability and staff wellbeing
structure effective supervision conversations using a clear and practical framework
set clear expectations, goals and follow-up actions with staff
give constructive feedback in a fair, respectful and professional way
identify staff strengths, development needs and areas for improvement
support staff accountability without creating unnecessary defensiveness
use supervision records and agreed actions to support consistency and follow-through
understand how regular supervision contributes to safer, more responsive care
approach appraisal conversations as part of staff development, not just annual review
By the end of the workshop, delegates will have:
a clearer understanding of their role in staff supervision and appraisal
practical tools for structuring supervision sessions
more confidence in giving feedback and setting expectations
strategies for supporting staff development and accountability
a better understanding of how supervision contributes to care quality and team culture
practical ways to make supervision more meaningful, consistent and useful
The workshop will include:
the difference between supervision, appraisal and informal support
why supervision matters in regulated care settings
preparing for a supervision conversation
structuring the discussion
setting expectations and goals
giving constructive feedback
recording actions and following up
supporting staff development
balancing encouragement with accountability
using supervision to improve practice, culture and care quality
This workshop is suitable for care providers who want to strengthen the confidence and consistency of Team Leaders, Senior Carers and new managers in carrying out effective staff supervision and appraisal conversations.
It can be delivered as an open course or as in-house training tailored to the needs, policies and supervision systems of your organisation.
